In his last Daily Telegraph column of the year, James Caan characterised 2009 as a year of ‘bringing out the best in people’ when it comes to recruitment.

He described how he’d seen a positive change in jobseekers, with applicants becoming more proactive, and described the candidate-saturated jobs market as a ‘survival of the fittest’ situation.

He was also interested in seeing that despite the economy, a good number of people had set up their own business, commenting ‘it's great to see that the recession has not doused Britain's entrepreneurial spirit’.

The online recruitment industry was also a hot topic. The webrecruit chairman wrote: ‘This year has also proved challenging to the recruitment world. There's been a surge of employers that now use the internet to find talented new recruits, bypassing recruitment agencies and other traditional means of sourcing candidates.

“The industry is polarising. Search and selection will continue to be used to fill high-level roles, but other requirements, particularly the hiring of large numbers of staff, will be filled online. What we have seen in the Noughties is traditional "bricks and mortar" models being superseded by online technology-driven businesses”.
